Instructing

I Observe and Learn
What is “instructing”?

“Instructing” consist in giving instructions or directions to somebody to show them how to do something.

How to use a printer
  • First, turn on the machine and load the paper in the machine. Then, create a document.
  • Next, select paper set up.
  • All of the verbs are in the imperative, and are linked with sequencers such as: first, and, then, next.
II Rules to keep in mind

The imperative: We generally use the imperative form to make instructions simple and clear.

Positive form: The bare infinitive + complement

N.B: the bare infinitive means without “to”.

Negative form: Do not + infintive form + complement

When giving a short list of instructions, we use sequencers: first, then, after that, next and finally.

Positive form:

Make sure the machine is on.

Negative form:

Do not touch the metal parts.

Modal auxiliaries to give instructions

When giving instructions, we can also use modal auxiliaries like: "must, have to and need to".

Remember what you have learnt in class:

"First, you need to press this button. Then, you  have to select an I.S.P. Next, you must click on the mail icon".

The positive form
  • You + need to + infinitive + complement.

"You need to wait for the connection"

  • You + must + infinitive + complement.

"You must make sure the machine is on"

  • You have to + infintive + complementt.

"You have to load the paper in the machine"

When giving instructions, “must",  “have to” and “need to”  are used to say that the action is important and necessary.

The negative form
  • We  use "must not" only to say that the action is prohibited / is not allowed.

You + must not / mustn't + infintive + complement.

"You must not touch the metal parts"

  • Be careful, we cannot use «don't have to» or «don't need to» or «needn't» to say that the action is prohibited because they express absence of obligation.

"You don't have to enter your phone number"means" you aren't obliged to enter your phone number".

“don’t have to” “don’t need to” are used to say it is not  necessary, while mustn’tand cannotexpress prohibition.
