What do we use the Internet for? or why do we use it?

"What for" and "why" call for the same answer

We want to know the purpose of an action: the intention behind the action.

To answer this kind of question, we use the link words:

                                    To / in order to  / so as to

1 Observe the answers
  • We use the Internet to surf.
  • We also use it so as to send and receive messages.
  • We use it in order to listen to the world radio stations.
  • We use it so as to make friends.
II Rules to keep in mind
  1. To express positive purpose, we use
  • Subject + verb form...so as to + infinitive + complement.
  • Subject + verb form…in order to + infinitive + complement.
  • Subject + verb form…to + infinitive + complement.

Dialogue  A

A: What does Lynda learn foreign languages for?

B: She learns foreign languages so as to get a good job.

Dialogue  B

A: Why does Hakim run every day?

B: He runs every day to keep fit

  1. To express negative purpose, we  use
  • subject + verb form... in order not to + infintive + complement.
  • subject +verb form… so as not to infintive + complement.

Or

  • subject + verb form + complement not to + infintive, but + to infinitive...
  • Be careful we cannot use ‘not to without but + to.
  •  Use the Internet not to make friends, but to do research.
  • She doesn't eat sugary food so as not to put on weight.
  • So as not to waste his time, he does shopping on the Internet.
  • I go to work by bicycle in order not to pollute the air.
  1. Other forms to express purpose

​We can also use «so that / in order that».

 

Observe

They study hard so that they can get through the final exams.

She sleeps early in order that she will be in good shape.

Subject + verb + complement +so that +subject + will /can +verb…

We use a noun after «for» if we refer to an individual person.

Observe
  1. He popped into the supermarket for some apples.

We cannot say for buying some apples, but we say to buy some apples.

  1. She works for the money.

Or

  1. She works so as to earn money.
