Exam 7
Frederick Douglass is one of the greatest leaders of the fight against slavery. He was born in 1818 in
Maryland. As a young boy, the wife of this master taught him to read and write. At the age of 20, he decided to escape to New York. From there, he went to Massachusetts. One day, he was asked to speak at an antislavery meeting in Nantucket. From that day, large crowds came to hear him wherever he went.
Later, he wrote a book about himself entitled:”The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass.” Afraid to be arrested by slave-catchers, he escaped to England. There, his freedom was bought from his former master.
In 1847, Douglass returned to United States and started an Anti-slavery newspaper called: “The North Star”.
It gave a voice to other black writers. They called for equal treatment of the blacks. They also called for join
the women’s rights movement of the time.
Frederick Bailey-his real name-died in 1895. “There was no greater hero than him”are the words of praise carved on his tombstone.
