Phonology: words and sounds /t/ /d/ /id/ and /s/ /z/ /iz/ and silent letters
The “ed” form of adjectives and that of the simple past and past participle of regular verbs is pronounced /t/ /d/ / id/
It is pronounced:
- /t/ after voiceless consonants rather than /t/ such as: /p/ /k/ /f/ /h/ /s/
Examples: helped, looked, laughed, finished, touched, kissed....
- /d/ after vowels, semi vowels and consonants than /d/ such as: /b/ /g/ /v/ /dz/ /z/ /m/ /n/ /l/ /r/ /th/ /w/ /y/
Examples: disturbed ,waved, refused ,blamed, rained, travelled, ordered, bathed, destroyed.
- /id/ after verbs ending in /t/ /d/
Examples: wanted, started, populated, ended, guided…
