I DEFINING PEACE AND CONFLICTS

People often try to live in peace because conflicts and war always lead to bad consequences such as casualties, suffering and destruction. Peace is very important between countries or individuals. Therefore some people do their best to stop the conflicts and settle the disputes in a peaceful way, we call them “Peacemakers”

2 B/Learn:
peace

peace(noun): 

  • Freedom from disturbance; tranquility; calmness.
  • A state or period in which there is no war or fighting, or a war has ended.
  • "He just wanted to drink some coffee in peace"
  • After many years of war, people on both sides were longing for peace

We can talk about peace between countries, between individuals and even within ourselves (inner peace).

Conflict (noun):

  1. A prolonged armed struggle / war / fight / combat / battle.
  • The United Nations tries to settle the conflicts peacefully.
  • There is a violent conflict between the two countries over the a small island.

Conflict (noun):

  1. A strong disagreement between people, groups, etc., that results in often angry argument
  • Everyone in my family always tries to avoid conflict.

Peaceful (adjective): free from ​war or ​violence/  ​calm and ​quiet; ​free from ​worries.

  • Students have organized a peaceful demonstration.
  • She is a peaceful person

Casualty (noun):a ​person ​hurt or ​killed in a ​war or other ​an accident.a ​person ​hurt or ​killed in a ​war or other ​destructive ​eventa ​person ​hurt or ​killed in a ​war or other ​destructive ​event,a ​person ​hurt or ​killed in a ​war or other ​destructive ​event

Thecivil war in Syria is causing a lot of casualties.

To settle dispute (verb):to end a ​disagreement orto ​arrange something.

My ​father and I have ​agreed ​finally to settle ​our ​differences.

  • Peace is necessary for people to live happily.
  • Conflicts and wars cause a lot of damage.
II THE UNITED NTATIONS

The United Nations(UN) is an intergovernmental organization which was created after the end of the devastating World War II. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of natural disaster and armed conflicts.

The UN has five principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council; the Economic and Social Council; the Secretariat,and the International Court of Justice. UN System includes many agencies like the World Health Organization(WHO), the World Food Program(FAO), UNESCO, UNICEF and UN peacekeeping troops. The UN's most prominent officer is the Secretary-General, an office held by South Korean Ban Ki-moon since 2007.

The organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, and a number of its officers and agencies have also been awarded the prize because they are considered as peacemakers.

2 B/ Learn :
A right

A right (noun):a legal or moral thing that a person should to have, get, or do.

Everyone has the right to free education.

Be careful!

The word “right” has many homonyms ( the same spelling and the same pronunciation) :

“Right” as adjective.
  • right# wrong: Your answers are all right.
  • right # left : We write with the right hand.
“Right” as adverb.
  • right= immediately: I ‘ll do it right now.
  • right# left:  Turn right.
The Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize:: is a prize awarded annually to people who have  done the best work for fraternity and peace between nations.

2015 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the Tunisian authorities for their effort in making peace in Tunisia.

Human rights:  The basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are considered to be entitled, often held to include the rights to life, liberty, equality, and a fair trial, freedom from slavery and torture, and freedom of thought and expression.
