WHY" NO MAN IS AN ISLAND”?

 

In this unit, you will have to conduct a survey about people’s readiness to face natural and man-made disasters.

The title “No Man Is an Island “ is a famous sentence from one of John Donne’spoems. He expresses his feelings about what humanity should be:  “Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind”.

 All in all, we have to help one another and preserve the whole humanity through solidarity.

A Man-made or natural?

Which disasters are man-made?

Car crashes, plane crashes and oil spills are manmade disasters, while  floods, earthquakes and damage occasioned by hurricanes are natural disasters.

Be careful about their combinations:

​​1.to beg someone to do something.

‘Please, stay with me,’ he begged them.

He begged them to stay with him.

2. to apologize to someone  for verb + ing

  •     ‘I ‘m sorry for being late,’ she said.
  •     She apologized for being late.

3. to order someone  to + verb

  • ‘Stop playing with the dog,’ he ordered them.
  • He ordered them to stop playing with the dog.

4. to suggest + verb + ing / suggest that subject + should + verb

  •  “Why don’t we look for a new flat?’ she suggested.
  • She suggested looking for another flat.
  • She suggested that they should look for another flat.

5. to advise someone to do

  • ‘If I were you, I would take a rest,’ he advised me.
  • He advised me to take a rest.

6.to blame someone for + having done something

  • “We have lost the money.It’s your fault!
  • She blamed him for having lost the money.
  • 7. To admit that Subject + verb + complement
  • To admitdoing something wrong.
  • ‘I have stolen the money,’ he admitted.
  • He admitted stealing the money
  • He admitted that he had stolen the money

8. to agree that + subject + verb + complement.

  • ‘You ‘reright.The competition is successful,’ he agreed.
  •   He agreed that the competition was successful.

9. To promise that subject+ will + infinitve

To promise  to do something

  • ‘I will do my best,’ he promised.
  •  He promised that he would do his best.
  • He promised to do his best.
