The present simple

I Observe and Learn

“My name is Sofia. Today, I would like to describe to you a typical day of my life.

On weekdays, I generally get up very early in order to get ready for school.

As I‘m a boarder, I have to be in the school refectory at 7 a.m for breakfast and then have classes from 8:30 a.m to 15 p.m. I never miss lunch at the refectory at 12:15. After school hours, I usually train in the school sports compound. From 6:30 p.m till 7:30 p.m, I am often in private study. The lights out is always at 10 p.m, so I have to go to bed early”.

Observe how Sofia describes her daily activities
  • I generally get up very early.
  • I never miss lunch.
  • I usually  train  after school hours.
  • I am often in private study from 6:30 p.m  till 7:30 p.m.

She has used frequency adverbs and the present simple to say  how often she gets up earlyhas lunch in the school refectory, trains  and is in private study.

II Rules to keep in mind
1 When do we use the present simple?

We use the present  simple  to:

  • Describe daily  activities and repeated actions.
  • Talk about scientific facts and general truths: The sun rises in the east.
  • To give opinions: I prefer to stay in.
2 The forms of the present simple:
Its affirmative form

I /You /we /They + verb +complement.

  • We make furniture.

She  / He / It + verb+ complement.

  • She participates in competition.
Its interrogative form

Do + I / you / we / they + verb + complement?

  • Do  they drink milk?

Does she / he / it + verb + complement?

  • Does she  drink milk?
Its negative form

I / You / we / They + do not + verb + complement.

  • They do not understand anything.

She / He / It + does not + verb + complement.

  • He does not work every day.

Pay attention to the spelling of the present simple verb with the third person of the singular: she, he and it.

All the verbs take an "s" in the simple present when conjugated in the third person singular (he, she, it) form:

  • I visit my parents every summer holiday. But my wife visits her parents every weekend.
  • My brother meets his girlfriend every day.

So the rule is: He / she / it + Verb + S
