In letters we use specific words to  express the reason why we are writing. 

 

Notice in the following
A A letter of apology starts with
  • "I am writing to apologize for my son's misbehaviour".                 
  • "I'm sorry for Bill's misbehaviour".

 

B An invitation starts with
  • "Mr and Mrs Brighton would like you to attend  the wedding party of

    their daughter Helen".

  • "We'll be pleased to see you at the party we'll organize on Saturday-evening from 8 P.M to 6A.M".  

 

C A letter of enquiry

" I am writing to enquire about the trip to Turkey".

 

D A letter of application

"I would like to apply for the job-position which was advertised in El Watan newspaper of Monday,October 26th 2015".

 

E A letter of complaint

"I am writing to complain about the bad treatment that my daughter experienced in your class".

A To apologize / apologise to someone for something/doing something

To apologise to tell someone that you are sorry that you have done something wrong.

  • You must apologize to the teacher for being late.
  • She should apologize to Bob for the delay.

 

B To inquire/ enquire about something

To inquire about  to ask for information.     

  • She would like to inquire about the flights to London.
  • I am writing to inquire about your advertisement in the Times.

 

C To apply to a university / a company for a place or a job

To apply to make a formal request, usually written for something such as a job, a place in a university, or permission to do something.

  • I applied to four universities and was accepted by all of them.
  •  He is planning to apply to a business company for a job.

 

D To complain to someone about somebody / something

To complain to say that you are annoyed, not satisfied, or unhappy about someone or something.

  • Workers complained about working conditions.
  • He complained to the police about the noise.

 

3 Rules to keep in mind

Some verbs are always followed by one or two prepositions.

 

We must learn them:

 

  • to apologize / apologise to someone for something/doing something.
  • to inquire/ enquire about  something.
  • to apply to a university / a  company for a place or a job.
  • to complain to someone about somebody / something.
