A Reminder of Intonation and the Two Sounds of ‘ch’
1. We generally use a rising tone in yes /no questions and polite requests. ↗
Yes /no questions:

" Do you speak Chinese? "

"Are you late?"
Polite requests: ↗
"Could you show me the way to the post-office, please?"
2. We generally use a falling tone in Wh-questions and definite sentences. ↘
Wh-questions:
↘
How long wil you stay in Japan?
↘
What time is it?
Definite statements:
↘
I intend to stay there for two weeks.
↘
I don't know.
Note that we mark the intonation on the last word of the sentence.
Keep in mind: there are two sounds for the “ch”

There are no specific rules to identify their pronunciation in a word;however, there is a reason which is related to the origin of the word.
