I Part one: Reading (15 points)
Read the following text carefully and do the activities

The earthquake, which measured 6.7 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as Spain, was Algeria’s worst in more than twenty years. The earthquake devastated numerous towns throughout Boumerdes on May 21st, 2003 at 7:44 pm, when families were gathering for dinner. It killed 2,200 people and at least 20,000 families became homeless.

When the earthquake hit, Algerian Red Crescent staff and volunteers were quick to respond to the disaster, participating in search and rescue efforts, providing first aid, transporting the injured to hospitals, mobilizing blood donors and distributing relief goods.

Following the disaster, the International Federation launched an appeal for immediate response for quake victims. Many National Red Crescent and Red Cross societies sent their rescue teams and sniffer dogs to search for survivors trapped under the rubble. Now the Federation is supporting the Algerian Red Crescent to provide up to 40.000 people with essential assistance over the next few months, in the form of food, water, tents and relief items. As well as providing material assistance, they will also continue to provide vital psychological support services to traumatized people

Part Two: Written Expression (05pts)

Topic one :  Write a short passage about the danger of natural disasters and the catastrophic consequences they may cause and show how important is solidarity in post-disaster era.

(Help yourself with the information provided in the text)

Floods and earthquakes are the natural disasters that Algerians fear most. This is because Algeria is located in a seismic area and unexpected storms can happen whatever the season.

People still bear in mind the images of flattened houses and buildings destroyed in Boumerdes and El Asnam by strong earthquakes. Earthquakes and floods have caused many deaths in Algeria. The deadliest were the 2001 floods that killed 700 people in Bab El  Oued and  the 1980 earthquake that hit Cheliff killing 2,633 people and leaving thousands of people homeless .

The positive thing that Algerians always remember is the spontaneous actions of solidarity coming from all parts of the country as well as from abroad.Lorries of food, tents, blankets  and  clothes drove to the damaged areas.Planes carrying  foreign rescue teams and special equipment flew to Algiers just after the disastershad  happened. These gestures of generosity are priceless and remind us of John Donne’s saying:”No man is an island.”
